How to Build a Safe Fire

In our previous posts we’ve discussed the importance of buying the right firewood. We’ve also talked about how to buy, store and use that wood. Now that you have the right firewood for your home, do you know how to create a safe fire? It’s actually pretty easy with these simple tips.

  • Watch your surroundings. Make sure flammable household fixtures like drapes, curtains or newspapers are cleared from the area.
  • Use the right kindling. Newspaper, small sticks or organic fire starters are all great kindling options. Never use gasoline, kerosene or charcoal starter to get your fire going.
  • Keep the area clean. Removing ash buildup before your next fire keeps the area clean. It also reduces the risk of accidentally spreading the fire. Make sure to wait until the ashes have cooled before throwing them away. Smoldering ashes could spark a new fire.
  • Have an extinguisher close at hand. No matter how careful you are, accidents can happen. That’s why it’s a good idea to have a fire extinguisher near your fireplace.
  • Have your chimney serviced regularly. Your chimney should be swept when there is 1/8 inch of sooty buildup, according to the Chimney Safety Institute of America. It’s also a good idea to have a chimney inspection every year. This holds true if you don’t use your chimney very much or even at all. That’s because a home’s other heating devices also release toxic gases through the chimney; when debris clogs its escape, those harmful fumes remain in your home.
