Prepare for Winter

Have you ever seen a business completely flooded from a frozen pipe? A single burst pipe can cost you in thousands in repair bills and mold remediation—not to mention the revenue lost while you have to close down to make repairs. The good news is that by following a few simple steps, you can keep your pipes nice and toasty, and your customers rolling in the door:

Insulate: Insulate your pipes with an approved material, like heat tape. Make sure to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on these items, as they can cause fires if not used properly.

Warm: Keep the heat on, even when no one’s around. Even when you’re closed, it’s crucial that you keep the heat set on at least 55 degrees to reduce the chance of freezing.

Drip Drop: Just like mom used to say, leave the faucets dripping just a bit. Even this small amount of water running through the pipes will help to keep them warm and clear.

Protect Yourself: Despite all of our precautions, sometimes pipes will still freeze. Make sure that you’re prepared for this possibility with a strong business property insurance policy from CNR Insurance. An income protection policy can also be invaluable, making up for lost income in case your business should have to close to repair damage. Don’t take the risk!

If this advice is too little, too late, don’t panic. If you turn on a tap and no water emerges, call a plumber immediately. Never try to thaw the pipes with an open flame. Leave this one to the professionals.
