The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently
released a report on lane departure technology. The report evaluated different
crash avoidance features and the types of crashes that the technology would
address.
Results of the study indicated that lane departure warning
lowers rates of single-vehicle sideswipe and head-on crashes by 11 percent and
lowers injuries of the same type by 21 percent.
Jessica Cicchino, IIHS vice president for research, lead the
study and was pleased to give initial findings, “This is the first evidence
that lane departure warning is working to prevent crashes of passenger vehicles
on U.S. roads. There’s potential to save a lot of lives.”
