Plan for the Worst, Hope for the Best

It’s happened. Maybe it was an earthquake, toppling and breaking everything you own. Or maybe it was a fire or a tornado or any one of the other disasters that can incapacitate your business. Whatever the cause, it’s time to start rebuilding. Where do you start?

•    Communicate. Get in touch with your employees. Are they safe? Are they willing and able to return to work? What about your customers? Are they picking up the pieces of a widespread disaster, or will they be surprised to find you closed? Use social media or set up a Web site to keep everyone in the loop.

•    Call your insurance agent. This is why you have insurance. Call your agent as soon as possible to begin the claims process. Not only is this a good way to assess your damage in an orderly way, it also helps to get the claims process early. After all, the sooner you get started, the sooner you can get your money and get back to business.

•    Call the SBA. If you aren’t sure how you’ll manage while you’re picking up the pieces of your business, contact the Small Business Administration. In many cases, they can help tide you over with a loan until you can get back on your feet. Visit http://www.sba.gov for more information.

Since disasters can happen at any time, remember to check up on your business property insurance policy regularly, and make sure you have the coverage you need. Let us help you out with that. Call us today: 410-897-9890.
